How ever it burned on the 2 included DVD-R just fine.

I found out I was 2 updates behind on the firmware so I did the update as requested. While a 1. Rest assured the 1. TDK just forgot to list it for both version of the same drive. And I was right!! Armed with the newest firmware this drive is still only able to burn to disc rated no faster then 8X.

So if make sure you buy 8X disc until they release a firmware newer then 1. Comments posted by Michael from United States, February 08, Rated this writer No rating. After plenty of burns over the last year, this burner has proven itself to be a quality drive.

Though it's a little finicky on the disk brands, it works well with most. I have had some issues with using -R's Comments posted by the timekeeper from United States, January 23, Rated this writer 7 of I've had this drive now for about 1 year. This has been a good drive. I have used numerous programs, roxio 6, nero, dvdxcopy, dvd shrink, ulead movie factory and have not had any problems playing them in my xbox.

The only problem that I have is that it is a little slow which is the reason I gave this an 8 instead of a Comments posted by dave from United States, December 24, Rated this writer 8 of Burns great burns any dvd I throw at it only bad spot is when I try to rip some DVDs to the harddrive.

Comments posted by skydogj from United States, December 22, The only advice I can give anyone is not to multitask while buring, and stay away from max speed when doing CD's. Great product, I would recommend to anyone. Make sure you update the firmware regularly. Comments posted by Josh from United States, July 17, Rated this writer 9 of This drive is definitely finicky.

With that said just reading the reviews, and comments, it looks fair to have somewhat that ratio of htis and misses. I ended up getting another drive the HP i, works like a charm so far, no coasters yet. A firmware is only one major aspect of a source of a fault, same goes for software. Sure TDK is great still, they manufacture good media but hell making a coaster with TDK media tells me there is something missing.

The drive is decent, despite it's lifespan it had with me very short , but I wouldn't say it's something i'll pickup again. Don't believe everything you read from someone elses feedback, because reality has it if your going to talk you better have the REAL credentials, and the qualified experience and vast knowledge don't lie you know who you are Gave this drive a 3, because overall it just didn't quite have the support, and enough positive feedback for me to judge it as a good drive.

I will be extremely nice in saying it's a "decent" drive. Considering I only made 60 dvd's successfully with the unit, and about 25 coasters Who cares Dual Layers are coming out soon anyway You might need to reset the drive to its original driver by putting a pin in the reset slot that you should find on the drive.

This resets the drive back to its default state. I hope this helps you. Hey Alan, have you had any luck with your CD problem? I'm having the same trouble. But when I do this it only works the first couple of times I insert disks. Then it stops recognizing them again. I figured one of the drivers must be corrupt or something, so I tried reinstalling the system and it still does it. No luck. I don't think it could be a firmware problem because these are disks I've had around for a while, and I believe firmware upgrades just get the drive to recognize newer media?

But I can't see how it could be mechanical with the way it's acting. Have you tried uninstalling the drive like I did? Did it react the same way? I'm hesitant about trying Peconet's reset-slot solution because I think that would just duplicate what I've already tried.

But I've searched all over for solutions to this and I'm stumped. Well I tried a number of solutions but the one that eventually worked was I replaced the drive. None of the other solutions I found worked at all. I upgraded the firmware, removed then re-installed it, found the latest drivers, and nothing worked.

I even installed it into another system and the problem happened there too. The new drive is working perfectly. So I get to buy a new drive now!

Sure is a bizarre problem though, isn't it? I just pulled a N out of a recycle pile. XPSP2 identified it and let me right in. Driver backups offer an instant, secure way to restore a driver to an earlier configuration, if needed. This website is using cookies.
