Loved each and every part of this book. I will definitely recommend this book to classics, fiction lovers. Your Rating:. I saw her mastheads above the ridge as the sun went down. He raised sharply his simple face, overcharged by a terrible growth of whisker, and emitted his usual ejaculations: "Bless my soul, sir!

You don't say so! My second mate was a round-cheeked, silent young man, grave beyond his years, I thought; but as our eyes happened to meet I detected a slight quiver on his lips.

I looked down at once. It was not my part to encourage sneering on board my ship. It must be said, too, that I knew very little of my officers. In consequence of certain events of no particular significance, except to myself, I had been appointed to the command only a fortnight before. Neither did I know much of the hands forward. All these people had been together for eighteen months or so, and my position was that of the only stranger on board.

I mention this because it has some bearing on what is to follow. But what I felt most was my being a stranger to the ship; and if all the truth must be told, I was somewhat of a stranger to myself.

The youngest man on board barring the second mate , and untried as yet by a position of the fullest responsibility, I was willing to take the adequacy of the others for granted. An Outcast of the Islands Joseph Conrad. This duality causes us to live our lives with several, slightly different personalities. For example the captain acts one way with his crew but is completely different with his secret sharer. Because we are multiple parts across a rift, we yearn to bring the parts of ourselves together and to connect with someone who is similar and resonates with the more-liked aspects of ourselves.

Because the narrator resonates with Leggatt immediately he wants him nearby. The narrator wants to connect with him. Is Conrad trying to show how we all need companionship and love? Does Conrad push us to decide if aiding someone we care about will let us reconcile the parts of ourselves into something better and new? What Conrad does show is that by helping Leggatt, the captain becomes a better person. The value of having someone he can empathize with as a companion is worth the stress of doing something not totally ethical, and later something downright dangerous.

What pushes the captain to take the risk of hiding Leggatt? The captain is on his maiden voyage with a new crew whom he does not feel close with. His need to connect with someone is so strong he is willing to break the law to have it. The friendship of the secret sharer becomes so important to the captain that he is willing to risk the safety of the boat and the entire crew. The captain achieves an emotional intimacy with Leggatt, quickly, and this satisfies a deep need we all have to be accepted.

Conrad shows us what people will do for others, what sacrifices they will make for those they feel a kinship with. The captain proves he will ignore the law and overthrow common sense for someone he cares about. Our need to find someone like ourselves is so great that we will do almost anything to find a friend. Captain Archbold, head of the ship Sephora, cares more about his own reputation than the fairness of justice. Lastly Conrad uses this sea story to tell show us how a character becomes stronger after a challenge.

The captain starts out the story a person who is not confident in his own abilities or himself. During the course of the story the pressure of having to keep a convict hidden is almost too much to bear.

Yet because of this pressure the captain becomes stronger and more confident. At the end of the story the captain takes a great risk steering the ship in so close to shore. The boat is a millimeter from crashing against the rock.
