In the case of business networks, switches are often necessary due to the large number of network devices that need to be connected, such as printers, computers and IP phones. If you want to use a static IP address on one of your computers, only minimal configuration is required on the D-Link switch itself.
Once the switch is configured, set the static IP address on the computer. Connect your D-Link switch to your network router with a network cable and turn it on. Plug another network cable into a network-out port on the switch and plug the other end of it into your computer. Log on to the computer as an administrator. Right-click the network icon in the system tray area of the Windows taskbar, select "Network and Sharing Center" and then click "Change adapter settings" Windows 7 or "Manage network connections" Windows Vista in the left pane.
Right-click the "Local Area Connection" adapter currently in use -- there won't be a red "X" in the icon -- and click "Properties" in the context menu. Select the "Use the following IP address" option and enter the address you'd like to set as the computer's static IP address.
